Your windshield is one of the major safety devices of your car. A defective or improperly installed windshield can result in serious injury. If your TT experiences a roll-over, the windshield will keep the car from collapsing. It is recommended that installation be done by a professional, but if you take your time and are thorough, you can do it yourself. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Large vinyl drop cloths Masking tape Razor blade Flathead screwdriver Small crowbar Sandpaper Bonding agent Silicone Safety gloves Safety eyeglasses Step by Step : 1 Inspect the windshield frame. If it has dents, cuts or corrosion, get it repaired. The new windshield will not bond to a bent frame. 2 Lay down vinyl drop cloths over the hood and dashboard. Windshields are made from safety glass, and if it is hit, it can shatter in many small pieces. 3 Remove the wiper blades and arms with a screwdriver. 4 Remove the rubber trim. Insert the screwdriver under the trim. Lift and pull the trim completely off the car. 5 Break the caulk by cutting around the windshield with a razor blade. 6 Remove the windshield. Insert the pry bar under the windshield. Gently pry the glass up. Go around the entire windshield slowly. An assistant can help you lift the glass out of the car. 7 Sand the mounting surface and new windshield. Sand the entire area of the mounting surface. Apply your bonding agent to the windshield frame. Rub your sandpaper along the inside edge of the new windshield. Apply the bonding agent to the sanded surface of the new windshield. 8 Apply the silicone. Lay a bead along the edge of the mounting area. Do not leave any gaps. 9 Insert the new windshield. Carefully lay the new windshield in the frame. Apply smooth and even pressure across the windshield. After the bonding agent has set, replace the rubber trim with your hand. Reinstall the wiper blades and arms. Tips & Warnings Wrap tape around your metal tools. Windshields can break. Check with your insurance company. Most cover professional windshield installation. Insist on original Audi windshield glass, it is some of the best made. Let the bonding agent cure for 24 hours before your drive your car. ResourcesWindshield Installation Instructions Buick . How to Replace the Windshield in a 2000 Ford Escort ZX2Your windshield does more than keep the bugs out of your face. It is considered one of the car's primary safety devices. Designers of the 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 have calculated the inherent strength of the windshield into the overall strength of the car. If your car were to get into a rollover accident, the windshield could save your life. While replacing the windshield on your 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 is a repair often best left to professionals, with a little patience and the right tools you can do it yourself. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Large vinyl drop cloths Masking tape Razor blade Flat-head screwdriver Small crowbar Sandpaper Bonding agent Silicone Safety gloves Safety eyeglasses An assistant Step by Step : 1 Look at the frame around the windshield. There should be no cracks, dents or corrosion. This will cause the new windshield from bonding to the car correctly. If there is damage to the frame, get it repaired. 2 Spread out the vinyl drop cloths. Lay one across the hood of the car up to the windshield. Put the second drop cloth across the interior dashboard. This will prevent broken pieces of the windshield from damaging the car. 3 Remove the wiper blades and arms. Use a screwdriver to take them off. 4 Pull off the metal trim. It will consist of five pieces and be held in place with small metal clips. Gently use a screwdriver to pry the pieces off the windshield. 5 Cut the sealant. Take your razor blade and cut around the windshield to break the seal. 6 Remove the windshield. Insert the crow bar and gently pry the corner of the windshield up. Slowly move the crow bar around the windshield. Have your assistant help you left the windshield out of the frame. 7 Prepare the new windshield and mounting surface. Run sandpaper around the mounting surface. Rub the bonding agent onto the mounting surface. Sand the edge of the new windshield that is to face the frame of the car. Apply the bonding agent to this area. This is to ensure a tight bond. 8 Bead the mounting surface with silicone. Make sure to go over the entire area of the surface. Don’t leave any gaps. 9 Insert the new windshield. Have your assistant help you carefully lay in the windshield. Make sure to press the windshield firmly into place. Allowing time for the bonding agent to dry, replace the metal trim. Use your screwdriver to insert each piece along with the metal clips. Re-install the wipers and arms, and then detail your work. Tips & Warnings Get an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) replacement windshield. There could be safety issues with aftermarket windshields not fitting correctly. Use caution when using metal tools on windshields--they can and do break. Tape your tools with black electrical tape. Do not drive your car for 24 hours after window installation. It can take that long for the bonding agent to cure. Wear eye and hand protection. Windshields are made of safety glass, which can splinter into tiny pieces. An improperly installed windshield can cause injury and contribute to an accident. Take a close look at the old rotor to see how it fits onto the shaft so that you can put the new one in properly later on. Part'"' KeeP'n9 Your Car m Good Condition, System by System All rotors go on in only one way: They either have a square-pin-insquare-hole/round-pin-in-round-hole arrangement, or they're notched or shaped so that they fit on the shaft pointing in only one direction. Still, it's a good habit to take a long look at anything you remove before you remove it, because you tend to forget how it's situated, and sometimes you have to make a choice. Don't be afraid to draw pictures if you aren't sure you'll remember how something fit together. 4. Look at the metal contacts that conduct current to the spark plug terminals. If the rotor contacts are corroded, broken, or cracked, you really need a new one! In any case, plan to use the new one after you're through working on the rest of the distributor. 5. Set the old rotor aside. Under the rotor on some vehicles, you may find something called the centrifugal advance (see Figure 12-19). Its function is rather complicated, it has nothing to do with this minor tune-up, and it hardly ever breaks. Just leave it where it is and forget it. Figure 12-19: A centrifugal advance. The static shield's purpose is to prevent radio interference. Sometimes the work ing of the electrical system in your car produces strange noises on the car radio. This gizmo prevents that. . Chapter 12: Keeping Your Electrical System in Tune Figure 12-20: The static shield. The static shield isn't hard to remove, but when you finish working on your distributor, be careful to put the shield back exactly the way it was. If you can't get it back properly, don't worry — your car will run perfectly without it, Buick . Can you get a drivers licence when you turn 17 in Georgia without having a learners permit?
Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser. * so just put the pieces in a paper bag and drive to your friendly service station. They'll put it back for you (although you may have to take a little kidding). Remove and replace the condenser Under the rotor (and possibly the static shield) are the points and condenser. Before you remove the condenser, look at the two little wires, one leading to the points and the other to the condenser, that join together — usually with some sort of little screw and washer arrangement (refer to Figure 12-13). Take a good look at how the wires (sometimes called leads) fit together in the gadget that holds them (called the primary terminal). The main purpose of the primary terminal is to prevent the clips at the ends of these wires from touching the floor of the distributor, which is called the breaker plate. If they touch the breaker plate, they short out and the car doesn't start. Now follow these steps: 1. Take a closer look at how the wires connect. Are the little clips at the ends of the wires touching each other? Or are they separated with something? Does the screw that holds them in place touch them? Or is there something in between? Figures 12-21, 12-22, 12-23, and 12-24 show how to disconnect several types of primary terminal arrangements.
